Who We Are
Founded in 1974 by Thomas Hamilton, Nally & Hamilton Enterprises, Inc. began as a contract surface mining operation in the coal fields of Eastern Kentucky and Western Virginia. From these early roots, we’ve grown into one of the region’s most experienced and respected mining companies—still family-owned and operated, now by the second and third generations of the Hamilton family.
We are proud to be the longest continuously operating coal mining company in Kentucky.

What Sets Us Apart
Nally & Hamilton stands on four core pillars: quality, environmental stewardship, safety, and people. We deliver consistent, high-quality coal products from multi-seam operations. We reclaim and restore legacy mining sites with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. Our crews are backed by a culture of safety, with regular training and oversight. And at every level, we value the experience, adaptability, and dedication of our people.
Our Specialty Coal
The geographic location of our mines gives us access to seams with unique ash and mineral characteristics. This allows us to produce a variety of specialty products—especially stoker coals and other precisely sized outputs. Our blending capabilities give us flexibility to meet our customers’ quality standards with consistency and precision.
Remining for a Better Future
Our specialty is re-mining areas that were mined prior to the 1977 Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. These legacy sites often suffer from unstable slopes, unreclaimed highwalls, and impaired surface water systems. By re-mining these areas, we: - Maximize remaining resource recovery - Eliminate highwalls and improve land stability - Enhance drainage, stream connectivity, and habitat - Leave the land in better shape than we found it
Our Reclamation Promise
In more than five decades of operation, we have never forfeited a single reclamation bond. Each year, we plant thousands of trees and seed hundreds of acres to restore native ecosystems. Our post-mining land use goals include forest, wildlife habitat, and pastureland. Stream mitigation crews work to reconnect and rebuild water systems to improve hydrology and water quality across our reclaimed sites.
Our Safety Culture
Safety isn’t a checkbox—it’s part of who we are. Our people protect our people. Each crew receives annual retraining at our Balkan Schoolhouse office, led by our Safety Director. We also conduct regular “walk and talk” safety meetings in the field to ensure best practices are followed. Our culture of safety means every team member is accountable and supported—because everyone deserves to go home safely at the end of the day.
